WILMINGTON, N.C. — Every destination has beaches, restaurants, and beautiful views. The places people remember have something more… they have an identity.
Following a nationwide competitive selection process that attracted more than 30 agency proposals, the City of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, has selected Wilmington-based Blue Ridge Creative Marketing to lead its destination branding initiative.
The project will focus on developing a comprehensive brand strategy, messaging framework, visual identity, and long-term brand guidelines designed to help define and communicate what makes Isle of Palms one of South Carolina’s most beloved coastal communities.
For Blue Ridge Creative Marketing, a destination branding agency serving organizations throughout the Southeast, the project represents far more than designing a logo or refreshing a visual identity.
It’s an opportunity to uncover the story that has been unfolding on the island for generations.
“Our goal isn’t to create a brand,” said Aaron Lee, Creative Director at Blue Ridge Creative Marketing. “It’s to reveal and organize the identity that already exists. Every community already has a story. Our job is to listen carefully, understand what makes that place meaningful, and build a foundation that allows others to experience it.”
That philosophy became the foundation of Blue Ridge’s proposal and approach to place branding.
The agency believes the strongest destination brands don’t begin with tourism. They begin with the people who already call a place home. When a community’s values, traditions, and character become the foundation of its brand, visitors experience something authentic rather than manufactured.
Building a Brand Around the Heart of Isle of Palms
Located just outside Charleston, South Carolina, Isle of Palms has welcomed generations of families seeking quiet beaches, outdoor recreation, and a slower pace of life.
Yet beyond its shoreline lies something less tangible: traditions that span decades, local businesses that become family rituals, neighbors who care deeply about preserving the island’s character, and a community where stories are passed from one generation to the next.
That sense of place will serve as the foundation for the Isle of Palms rebranding initiative.
The branding process will begin with discovery and community engagement. Blue Ridge will work alongside residents, business owners, community leaders, stakeholders, and visitors through research, interviews, workshops, and audience analysis to better understand the experiences, values, and perspectives that define Isle of Palms today.
Those insights will shape the city’s future brand strategy, messaging, visual identity, implementation guidelines, and communications standards.
“The best ideas are rarely the most obvious,” Lee said. “They’re uncovered through curiosity, thoughtful research, lived experience, and meaningful conversations. Before we ever begin designing, we want to understand what residents cherish most and what visitors continue to return for.”
A Different Approach to Destination Branding
Rather than creating marketing designed solely to attract visitors, Blue Ridge focuses on strengthening the relationship between people and place.
The most successful destination brands reinforce what residents value while helping visitors recognize and appreciate those same qualities. The result is a brand that feels authentic because it grows from the community itself.
For Isle of Palms, that means protecting the qualities that have made the island special for generations while creating a unified identity that supports its future.
The completed brand platform will include strategic messaging, visual identity development, brand standards, and long-term guidelines that help city departments, community organizations, businesses, and tourism efforts communicate from a shared foundation.
Success, according to Blue Ridge, won’t simply be measured by a new logo.
It will be measured by whether residents see themselves reflected in the brand. Whether visitors experience more than just another beach destination. Whether city leadership has a shared framework for communicating consistently. And whether future generations inherit a stronger foundation for preserving what makes Isle of Palms unique.
“People may come for the vacation,” Lee said, “but they return for the connection. Our responsibility is to help uncover what creates that connection and ensure it continues to define Isle of Palms for years to come.”
